“Nature is not a faithful ally of man; she seems always to be quite as deeply interested in the success of the parasite and of the mosquito.” —American malariologist Lewis W. Hackett, 1937

About MalariaResurgent.com and webhost Sonia Shah

The point of MalariaResurgent.com is to tell the truth about malaria, not to repeat hopeful myths that protect the fundraising base of NGOs, and the grant opportunities for malaria scientists, no matter how wonderful their work is. Extolling the virtues of bednets and the latest antimalarial technology – a partially effective vaccine, a drug that has already provoked resistance – is not the point of this website. This website is about the ecology of malaria, the history of our attacks against it, aimed at people who want to explore why we are, at our core, a malarial species. Sometimes that reveals truths about ourselves that are not pretty. There is no doubt that we must and can do better in the fight against malaria, but it is the conceit of this website that to do so we need to take a clear-eyed look at the reality of the disease, and of our complicated efforts to control it.
